OtoPro Non-Custom Filter Packs
OtoPro Non-Custom Filter Packs
Product Description
Product Description
The OtoPro Non-Custom Filter Packs are professional-grade filtered earplugs sold ready to wear. Each pack ships with the filter of your choice installed in a soft silicone tip, in your choice of Small/Medium or Large/XL, with a lanyard and zipper pouch included. No ear impression or fitting appointment is required. Four filter types are available: Impulse, Fidelity, Industrial, and LifeFlight. When a customer is ready to transition to a custom fit, the filter transfers into the separately sold Custom-Fit Sleeves for Filtered Plugs.
We designed the Non-Custom Filter Packs for customers who need protection immediately, who are working within a certain budget, or who want to test filtered protection before committing to a custom fitting. The filters themselves are the same components used in our OtoPro Custom Filtered plugs. The non-custom pack is the first step into the OtoPro system.
Choosing your filter
Four filter types cover the environments most customers need protection for.
Impulse filters are designed for sudden, very loud sound events. ANSI IPIL certified for impulse noise up to 166 dB, with 33 dB of attenuation at peak and only 5 dB NRR for soft sounds. Originally developed for military use and worn by NATO soldiers. The low NRR is intentional: speech, environmental cues, and game movement remain audible, while gunfire is clipped instantaneously. The filter contains a sophisticated membrane that responds dynamically to sound pressure. At conversation volume the membrane vibrates much like the eardrum itself, allowing sound to pass through with minimal dampening. As sound pressure rises, the membrane stiffens in correlation to the pressure, providing progressively more attenuation as the sound level climbs. Recommended for dental offices, veterinary clinics, dog kennels, dog trainers, construction, landscaping, and hunting and shooting.
Fidelity filters are tuned for environments where sound quality matters as much as protection. Designed with a flat 17 dB of attenuation across the frequency range, from bass to treble. The result is a uniform reduction in volume rather than the muffled, muddied sound that traditional earplugs produce by attenuating frequencies unevenly. Music keeps its detail. Speech stays intelligible. Recommended for concert-goers, musicians, movie theater-goers, and people with hypersensitivity to everyday sound.
Industrial filters are built for sustained, continuous noise. Roughly 23 to 26 dB of attenuation across the frequency range (SNR 26), tuned to remove damaging high-frequency content while keeping speech intelligible enough for communication on the floor. Recommended for factory work, heavy machinery, and farm equipment.
LifeFlight filters are tuned for the acoustic environment of helicopter cabins and helipads. Strong attenuation in the low frequencies where rotor blades produce their sustained noise, with a deliberate dip at the speech frequencies so communication remains intelligible. Pressure regulation properties help during rapid altitude changes. Recommended for LifeFlight first responder teams and other helicopter-based operations.
Why custom fit is ultimately what we recommend
The protection rating on any filtered earplug is measured in a laboratory with the product seated to its optimal seal. In the real world, the protection delivered depends on how well that seal is achieved against the user's own ear canal. Universal silicone tips are produced in a few sizes that approximate average canal geometry. They work for many people. They do not work consistently for everyone. Ear canals vary from person to person and between left and right within the same person.
A custom plug taken from an impression of the customer's specific ear canal removes that variability. The seal is repeatable. The protection rated on paper matches the protection delivered in the field. For shooters in regular training, competitors, professional users, and anyone whose hearing is critical to their work, custom is the right answer. These are quick and convenient products for real situations; however, custom-fit is recommended long-term.
Upgrade path
When a customer is ready to move into a custom fit, the filter from the non-custom pack transfers directly into a pair of Custom-Fit Sleeves for Filtered Plugs, molded from an impression of the customer's own ear canal. The investment in the filter carries forward. Only the sleeve changes. This is the path we recommend for most customers who begin with a non-custom pack.
Who they are for
The Non-Custom Filter Packs are the right choice for customers who need protection before a fitting appointment can be scheduled, professionals preparing for a particular event or season, anyone testing whether filtered protection is right for them, and customers working within a budget that does not yet include a custom plug. They are not designed as a permanent solution for serious or daily users. They are also not a daily hearing assistance device and do not provide amplification.
What is in the pack
- One pair of OtoPro filters in the type you selected, installed in silicone tips
- One silicone tip size (your choice of Small/Medium or Large/XL)
- OtoPro lanyard
- OtoPro zipper pouch
Care
Clean the silicone tips after each use. They can be wiped with a damp cloth or antibacterial cleaning tissues. Clean the filters only if necessary. Do not use alcohol-based cleaning solutions, soaps, or detergents. Store the plugs in the included OtoPro zipper pouch when they are not being worn.
Inspect the filter and silicone tip regularly for visible damage, obstruction, or wear. The filter is a precision component and provides its rated protection only when intact. If a filter appears damaged, obstructed, or no longer performs the way it did when new, replace it before using in any protective application. Contact us for replacement guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How do these compare to foam earplugs from the hardware store?
How do these compare to foam earplugs from the hardware store?
Both reduce sound, but they do it in different ways. A foam plug compresses, expands into the canal, and blocks sound across all frequencies indiscriminately, which means it also blocks speech, range commands, and ambient cues you need to hear. The OtoPro filter reduces dangerous peaks while letting normal-volume sound through, so you stay protected and aware at the same time. The trade-off is that foam delivers higher raw attenuation on paper, while a filtered plug delivers more usable protection in practice.
How do I know which filter to pick?
How do I know which filter to pick?
Choose by the environment you spend the most time in. Impulse is for sudden loud events: shooting, dental and veterinary work, kennels, construction, landscaping, anywhere impulse noise is the hazard. Fidelity is for environments where preserving sound quality matters: concerts, music, movie theaters, sound sensitivity. Industrial is for sustained continuous noise: factory work, heavy machinery, farm equipment. LifeFlight is for helicopter and rotorcraft. If your situation does not fit cleanly into one of these categories, contact us before ordering and we will help you pick.
How long does a non-custom filter pack last?
How long does a non-custom filter pack last?
The filter component is built to last for years of regular use under normal conditions. The silicone ear tips are designed as a replaceable component and can be ordered separately when they wear or stretch. If a filter is damaged, lost, or no longer performing the way it did when new, we are accessible for replacement guidance.

The non-custom ear tip sizes (Small/Medium or Large/XL) fit most adult and older adolescent ear canals. Contact us if you are buying for a child and we will help you decide.
Are these covered by HSA or FSA?
Are these covered by HSA or FSA?
Non-custom hearing protection products are generally not eligible for HSA or FSA reimbursement, because they are considered consumer-grade rather than medical-grade equipment. Our custom-fit products are typically eligible, and we provide a Letter of Medical Necessity on request to support those reimbursement claims. The non-custom filter packs themselves are an out-of-pocket purchase.
