Product Description

DefendEar DX3 at a glance: custom electronic shooting earplugs with 3 listening modes (Game, Clay, Tactical), fine-step volume control, vocal feedback, mute, and NRR 26 protection, fit by an audiologist from impressions of your ears.

The DefendEar DX3 is custom-fit electronic hearing protection for hunters and shooters who move between the duck blind, the sporting clays course, and the pistol bay. It suppresses gunshot impulse noise in every mode while amplifying the quieter sounds that matter: approaching birds, a guide's call, a conversation on the line. Made from impressions of your own ears, it seals and stays comfortable through a full day in the field, with no headband to break your cheek weld.

The three modes

Game Mode is for hunting. Output drops the instant a shot is detected, then returns so you can hear birds working and game approaching.

Clay Mode is for sporting clays, trap, and skeet, tuned for a faster rate of fire with other shooters nearby.

Tactical Mode is for practical pistol, 3-gun, and drills. Output drops after each shot and recovers quickly so you can hear range commands between strings.

Features

NRR 26 with impulse-noise suppression in every mode. Mode selection and fine-step volume on a digital rocker switch, plus a dedicated power button for power and mute. Vocal feedback announces your mode, volume limits, and low battery, and auto-save keeps your last settings. Wind-noise reduction and WaterShield moisture protection. CE EN352 certified with a 2-year manufacturer warranty, and our gold hard case is included.

DX1, DX3, or DX5: choosing your DefendEar

All three DefendEar DigitalX models share the same custom earpiece, impulse-noise protection, and 2-year warranty. The difference is how much control you want. The DefendEar DX1 runs one all-purpose shooting mode with simple push-button volume and a power button that doubles as mute. The DefendEar DX3 adds dedicated Game, Clay, and Tactical modes, finer volume control, vocal feedback, and auto-save. The DefendEar DX5 adds Range Mode for indoor and large-caliber shooting and a Wireless Communication mode for radio input. Not sure which fits how you shoot? Contact us and we will help you decide.

Why buy the DX3 through OtoPro

Custom electronic hearing protection is only as good as its fit. Your impressions are taken at one of OtoPro's 450+ provider clinics, your file stays with us, and every refit, repair, and warranty claim comes back through our team, not a generic help line. Because we are brand-agnostic, if another product suits your hearing and shooting better, we will tell you, even if it costs less.

Who it is for

Waterfowl and upland hunters, clay shooters, and practical shooters who want one custom electronic earplug that adapts to several kinds of shooting. For mostly indoor or large-caliber shooting, consider the DX5, or wear over-ear muffs on top of the DX3. The DX3 is not a hearing aid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why purchase the DefendEar DX3 through OtoPro?

The DX3's performance depends on the quality of the ear impression and the audiologist's understanding of how the device works in your specific shooting environment. OtoPro is a licensed audiology practice with a network of over 450 provider clinics across the US, Canada, and abroad. Your impressions are taken in a clinical setting, your file stays with OtoPro, and any future questions, refits, warranty claims, or upgrade conversations come through our team. That clinical relationship is the difference between treating the DX3 as a custom medical device and treating it as a commodity purchase.

What is the difference between the DefendEar DX3 and the DX5?

Both use the same custom earpiece, impulse-noise protection, rocker-switch volume control, vocal feedback, mute, and auto-save. The DX3 has three modes: Game, Clay, and Tactical. The DX5 adds two more: Range Mode, which is tuned for indoor and large-caliber shooting, and Wireless Communication Mode, which accepts tactical-radio audio through the optional DX5 Neck Loop. If you shoot mostly outdoors and do not need radio input, the DX3 covers the same ground for less.

What is the difference between the DefendEar DX3 and the DX1?

The DX1 runs a single all-purpose shooting mode with a simple push-button volume control and a power button that doubles as mute. The DX3 gives you three modes optimized for game, clay, and tactical shooting, a rocker switch with finer volume steps, vocal feedback that announces your mode and battery status, and auto-save of your last settings. If you shoot more than one discipline or want more control over what you hear, the DX3 is worth the step up.

Can I use my HSA or FSA to purchase the DefendEar DX3?

Yes, in most cases. The DX3 is a hearing protection device rather than a hearing aid, and the IRS recognizes hearing protection as a qualified medical expense when it is used to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. Most HSA and FSA administrators reimburse for custom hearing protection when the purchase is supported by a Letter of Medical Necessity from a licensed audiologist or physician. Following an impression appointment that includes a hearing test, OtoPro can provide that letter. Many OtoPro clients pay directly with their HSA or FSA card at checkout. Others pay out of pocket and submit for reimbursement after the fact. Plan specifics vary, so check with your plan administrator if you need certainty before ordering.

Can I use the DefendEar DX3 at indoor shooting ranges?

Yes, with double protection. The DX3 protects your hearing at an indoor range, but it does not have the dedicated Range Mode found on the DX5, so gunshots indoors will still sound sharp. Indoor ranges produce some of the most damaging noise exposure a shooter encounters, and OtoPro recommends wearing over-ear muffs on top of the DX3 in those settings. If most of your shooting is indoors or with large calibers, ask us whether the DX5 is a better fit. Outdoor shooting and hunting environments do not require this double-layer approach.

What happens if my DefendEar DX3 needs warranty repair?

The DX3 carries a 2-year limited manufacturer warranty. As your audiologist of record, OtoPro handles the warranty submission, the device shipment, and the coordination with the manufacturer. You do not have to navigate the warranty process on your own. If a fit issue comes up within the warranty period, OtoPro works with you and your provider clinic to adjust or remake as needed. After the warranty expires, OtoPro continues to handle any repair needs, and we relay manufacturer charges to you with transparency.

Can I use the impressions from a previous custom product?

Sometimes yes. If your prior impressions are still on file with OtoPro or the original manufacturer and your ears have not changed significantly since they were taken, OtoPro can often use them for a new DX3 order. Ear anatomy can shift over time, particularly after significant weight changes, and impressions older than two or three years may need to be remade for a clean fit. Reach out before ordering and OtoPro can confirm.

What does the DefendEar DX3 ordering process involve and how do I start?

Check out online, or reach out to us if you need a consultation. After checkout, OtoPro refers you to a provider audiologist in your area from the OtoPro network. The audiologist inspects your ear canal and takes an earmold impression. We encourage you to sit for a baseline hearing test while you are there. You then ship the impressions to OtoPro using the prepaid mailing label we email you. OtoPro places the manufacturer order on your behalf and the finished devices ship to you within 2-3 weeks of earmold impression receipt. After delivery, OtoPro is your point of contact for fit adjustments, troubleshooting, and any future service needs.
