DefendEar DX5
DefendEar DX5
Product Description
Product Description
The DefendEar DX5 is a custom-fit electronic hearing protection device designed specifically for shooters and hunters. Five programmed modes (Game, Clay, Range, Wireless Communication, and Hunter) cover the range of environments you encounter, from indoor ranges to deep woods. In every mode, the DX5 provides impulse-noise suppression that protects your ears from gunshot blasts while amplifying the ambient sounds you need to track game and communicate with your party. The DX5 is engineered for shooting performance not as a daily hearing device, which means the protection algorithms and amplification curves are tuned to the specific demands of the firing line and the field.
Why customers come to OtoPro for the DefendEar DX5
The DX5's performance depends on the quality of the custom ear impression, the audiologist's understanding of the wearer's intended use, and the relationship that continues after the fit. OtoPro is built around that reality. Your impressions are taken in a licensed clinic from OtoPro's network of over 450 provider audiologists. Your file stays with us. Warranty claims, refits, repairs, and any concerns about fit or function come back through OtoPro, not through a generic help line.
With OtoPro, we know that there is no one holy grail product that is best for everyone. That is why we have never aligned or obligated ourselves to a particular brand or model. If your hearing profile, use case, or environment is better suited to an alternative, we will guide you to the more appropriate product, even if it is a lesser cost to you. While it may be counter-intuitive in today's world, more expensive hearing protection is not always better.
The DX5 is purchased by many OtoPro clients using HSA and FSA funds. Hearing protection used to prevent noise-induced hearing loss is recognized by the IRS as a qualified medical expense, and most plans reimburse for custom hearing protection when the purchase is supported by a Letter of Medical Necessity. OtoPro provides that letter on request following an impression appointment that includes a hearing test, with eligibility ultimately depending on the customer's specific plan.
The five modes
Game Mode is for outdoor game shooting. The DX5 reduces output when a blast occurs and amplifies safe ambient sound between shots, with wind-noise reduction active. Clay Mode mirrors that protection profile but is optimized for the faster rate of fire on a clay course. Range Mode is for indoor firing and large-caliber shooting; output is reduced and speech intelligibility drops in exchange for heightened protection, and the manufacturer and OtoPro both recommend pairing the DX5 with over-ear muffs at indoor ranges. Wireless Communication Mode allows tactical-radio audio input through the optional DX5 Neck Loop accessory, prioritizing voice clarity over ambient tracking. Hunter Mode is for stalking or still-hunting, with ambient amplification reduced so your own footfalls and leaf rustle stay out of the way.
How it works
The DX5 delivers a 26 dB Noise Reduction Rating with Impulse Peak Insertion Loss values of 37.3, 44, and 42 dB at the three test impulse levels. A center rocker switch handles both mode selection and volume control. Vocal feedback announces mode changes and battery warnings. The mute function is a dedicated power-button action. An auto-save function preserves your last mode and volume setting when the device is powered off. The DX5 is CE EN352 certified and carries a 2-year limited manufacturer warranty. We include our specifically-designed gold hard case as a bonus.
Battery and operation
The DX5 uses a replaceable Size 13 Zinc Air battery (PR48), the same battery family commonly used across custom electronic hearing protection. Activation is simple: peel the tab, wait approximately two minutes for the battery to reach full voltage, then insert using the included magnetic insertion tool. Replacement batteries are widely available at hearing-aid suppliers and pharmacies. If a battery dies mid-use, the DX5 continues to provide passive noise protection at the same NRR; only the amplification and mode features go offline until a fresh battery is inserted.
Who they are for
Hunters, sport shooters, clay-target competitors, and recreational range users who want a single custom-fit device that handles multiple shooting environments. Anyone whose primary need is shooting protection rather than general daily wear or hearing assistance. The DX5 is not a hearing aid and is not designed for daily use outside of shooting and hunting environments.

Why purchase the DefendEar DX5 through OtoPro?
Why purchase the DefendEar DX5 through OtoPro?
The DX5's performance depends on the quality of the ear impression and the audiologist's understanding of how the device works in your specific shooting environment. OtoPro is a licensed audiology practice with a network of over 450 provider clinics across the US, Canada, and abroad. Your impressions are taken in a clinical setting, your file stays with OtoPro, and any future questions, refits, warranty claims, or upgrade conversations come through our team. That clinical relationship is the difference between treating the DX5 as a custom medical device and treating it as a commodity purchase.
How does the DefendEar DX5 compare to the SoundGear Phantom?
How does the DefendEar DX5 compare to the SoundGear Phantom?
DX5 is engineered specifically for shooters, with five programmed modes optimized for specific shooting environments and impulse-suppression algorithms tuned for gunshot noise. Neither amplify for daily hearing assistance. The DX5 does not stream Bluetooth audio; the Phantom does. The Phantom is housed in a hard acrylic shell while the DX5 uses an electronic module that fits inside of a stiff silicone mold of your ear. Regarding volume, the Phantom is reported to sound the most natural while the DX5 is reported to sound much more robust at full volume. We are glad to walk through which device fits your situation.
Can I use my HSA or FSA to purchase the DefendEar DX5?
Can I use my HSA or FSA to purchase the DefendEar DX5?
Yes, in most cases. The DX5 is a hearing protection device rather than a hearing aid, and the IRS recognizes hearing protection as a qualified medical expense when it is used to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. Most HSA and FSA administrators reimburse for custom hearing protection when the purchase is supported by a Letter of Medical Necessity from a licensed audiologist or physician. Following an impression appointment that includes a hearing test, OtoPro can provide that letter. Many OtoPro clients pay directly with their HSA or FSA card at checkout. Others pay out of pocket and submit for reimbursement after the fact. Plan specifics vary, so check with your plan administrator if you need certainty before ordering.
Can I use the DefendEar DX5 at indoor shooting ranges?
Can I use the DefendEar DX5 at indoor shooting ranges?
Yes, with caveats. The DX5's Range Mode is engineered for indoor firing and large-caliber shooting, and it provides reduced output specifically for those environments. Indoor ranges produce some of the most damaging noise exposure a shooter encounters, and the manufacturer and OtoPro both recommend double protection in those settings: the DX5 worn in-ear, plus over-ear muffs layered on top. Outdoor shooting and hunting environments do not require this double-layer approach.
What happens if my DefendEar DX5 needs warranty repair?
What happens if my DefendEar DX5 needs warranty repair?
The DX5 carries a 2-year limited manufacturer warranty. As your audiologist of record, OtoPro handles the warranty submission, the device shipment, and the coordination with the manufacturer. You do not have to navigate the warranty process on your own. If a fit issue comes up within the warranty period, OtoPro works with you and your provider clinic to adjust or remake as needed. After the warranty expires, OtoPro continues to handle any repair needs, and we relay manufacturer charges to you with transparency.
Can I use the impressions from a previous custom product?
Can I use the impressions from a previous custom product?
Sometimes yes. If your prior impressions are still on file with OtoPro or the original manufacturer and your ears have not changed significantly since they were taken, OtoPro can often use them for a new DX5 order. Ear anatomy can shift over time, particularly after significant weight changes, and impressions older than two or three years may need to be remade for a clean fit. Reach out before ordering and OtoPro can confirm.
What does the DefendEar DX5 ordering process involve and how do I start?
What does the DefendEar DX5 ordering process involve and how do I start?
Check out online, or reach out to us if you need a consultation. After checkout, OtoPro refers you to a provider audiologist in your area from the OtoPro network. The audiologist inspects your ear canal and takes an earmold impression. We encourage you to sit for a baseline hearing test while you are there. You then ship the impressions to OtoPro using the prepaid mailing label we email you. OtoPro places the manufacturer order on your behalf and the finished devices ship to you within 2-3 weeks of earmold impression receipt. After delivery, OtoPro is your point of contact for fit adjustments, troubleshooting, and any future service needs.
