Product Description

Custom-fit in-ear monitors for workers who need to hear the radio, hold a conversation, and stay protected from continuous industrial noise. Made in partnership with ACS, fit from impressions of your own ears, and wired to plug directly into a two-way radio's headphone jack.

Why this product exists

Industrial environments are loud enough that conventional earmuffs become the default. The muffs handle the noise but trap your own voice and breath inside your head, kill spatial awareness, and turn radio communication into a muffled signal on top of an already-muffled environment. Pulling them off to hear someone clearly is the workaround that defeats the protection.

The Industrial Communicator runs the math differently. An Industrial filter sits inside a high-fidelity ACS in-ear monitor that plugs into the radio. The filter is air-permeable, which keeps the inside of the ear at near-normal pressure. The radio comes through at the volume you set, not at the volume you can hear over a Bobcat.

How it works

The Industrial filter is mechanical, not electronic. No battery, no switch, no app. Sound entering the filter is attenuated by 23 to 26 dB across the frequency range (SNR 26), which puts continuous industrial noise (heavy equipment, generators, compressors, factory floors) into a safer range while preserving the shape of voices and signals.

The IEM portion handles the radio audio. The ACS hardware delivers clean speech intelligibility, the same fidelity used in stage monitor work for live performers who need to hear cues over loud music.

Fit and materials

Each set is manufactured by ACS from impressions taken in person by a licensed hearing care provider in our Preferred Provider Network. The impressions capture the canal shape, the bends and ridges of the concha, and the canal angle. The finished IEMs seat once and stay. No falling out under a hard hat, no readjusting between calls.

Who they are for

Energy plant operators and plant supervisors working continuous-noise environments where radio communication is the workflow. Construction foremen and superintendents who run a job on radio. Manufacturing and production crew leads. Pit crews and motorsport teams. Operators of heavy equipment who need clear radio communication with the rest of the crew. Anyone who has thrown muffs around the neck to take a call and missed something the muffs were supposed to be blocking.

The Industrial Communicator was originally developed for an energy plant where workers needed protection and radio comms simultaneously.

How to order

The Industrial Communicator requires an in-person ear impression appointment. OtoPro's Preferred Provider Network of licensed hearing care providers spans many cities across the US, Canada, UK, and Australia. If you have OtoPro impressions on file, the lab can use those. If you have current Starkey or SoundGear custom products, the fit profile is in the manufacturing system and can be reused.

Available in seventeen color options. Manufactured and shipped within four weeks of the impression appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to do before ordering?

If you already have ear impressions on file with OtoPro, nothing. Complete checkout and we send your impressions to ACS to build your Industrial Communicators. If you do not have impressions on file, complete checkout and we will pair you with a licensed hearing care provider in our Preferred Provider Network for the impressions appointment. We do not accept mail-in or self-sourced impressions.

What are the technical specifications of the Industrial filter?

Roughly 23 to 26 dB of attenuation across the frequency range, SNR 26, tuned to remove damaging high-frequency content while keeping speech intelligible enough for communication on the floor. The filter is mechanical and does not require a battery, switch, or app.

What kind of radio do these work with?

The Industrial Communicator ships with a 3.5mm cable that plugs into the headphone jack of a standard two-way radio. Most commercial and industrial radios in the Motorola, Kenwood, Icom, and similar lines support this connection. Contact us if you have questions about a specific radio model before ordering.

How long do the Industrial Communicators last?

The custom shells are durable medical-grade material and hold their shape for years with reasonable care. Ear canal anatomy changes slowly over adult life, so most clients get many years of use from a single set. The Industrial filters are mechanical and do not require service; replace them only if visibly damaged or if attenuation performance changes noticeably. The IEM cable is the most replaceable component and can be ordered separately if needed. We recommend regular inspection of shell, filter, and cable, and replacement of any component that shows signs of failure before relying on it in a protective application.

What is your return policy?

OtoPro offers a one-month warranty return window during which the full product price is refundable. The $75 professional service fee for the impressions appointment is non-refundable, as it covers clinical time already rendered. If your Industrial Communicators do not fit or function correctly within the warranty window, contact us and we will work with you to resolve the issue.

Where can I get my ear impressions taken?

OtoPro is a national company. Our Preferred Provider Network of licensed hearing care providers spans many cities across the United States, Canada, UK, and Australia. After checkout, we will pair you with the provider closest to you for the appointment. The impressions are then sent to ACS for manufacturing, and your Industrial Communicators are shipped to you within four weeks of the appointment.
