Why custom fit matters for sleep

Disposable foam and generic silicone work well enough when you are sitting upright. They press into the canal, hold their shape against gravity, and stay where you put them. Lying on your side changes the geometry. The pillow pushes the plug deeper into the ear, the foam compresses unevenly, and the seal that worked while you were standing now creates a pressure point that wakes you up at three in the morning.

What they block

These are passive earplugs, which means they block sound across a broad frequency range without amplification or filtering. They handle the kinds of noise most likely to wake you up: a partner's snoring, traffic and car doors outside the window, ceiling fans and HVAC cycling on, camp generators humming through the night, hotel hallway noise, the next room's television, the cabin neighbor heading out before dawn.

Fit and materials

The plugs are made from medical-grade soft silicone, soft enough to conform to the pillow without resistance, durable enough to survive years of nightly use. Each pair is manufactured from impressions taken in person by a licensed hearing care provider in our Preferred Provider Network. The impressions capture the canal shape, the bends and ridges of the concha, and the canal angle as it enters the ear. The finished plugs seat once and stay.

Sleeping earplugs require an in-person ear impression appointment. OtoPro's Preferred Provider Network of licensed hearing care providers spans many cities across the US, Canada, UK, and Australia. If you have OtoPro impressions on file, the lab can use those. If you have current Starkey or SoundGear custom products, the fit profile is in the manufacturing system and can be reused.
